The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Jinapor, has revealed that a total of 41 million trees have been planted since the initiation of the government’s flagship afforestation program, Green Ghana, in 2021.

Out of this number, an impressive 30 million trees are currently thriving at various growth stages.

Speaking to the press on June 4, 2024, ahead of the upcoming 2024 edition of the project scheduled for June 7, the Lands Minister shared a comprehensive overview of the project’s success. He highlighted that the 2022 edition saw the highest number of trees planted, with a total of 24 million trees. Additionally, the 2023 edition recorded a planting of 10.7 million trees, with an impressive survival rate of 81%.

Mr. Jinapor expressed gratitude for the continuous support received from the public, leading to the surpassing of the initial tree planting targets. He emphasized the importance of nurturing the planted trees to ensure their full development and maturity.

Regarding the 2024 edition, the Minister assured that all necessary preparations have been made to achieve the set target of over 10 million trees. The project has traditionally relied on support from the private sector, with the government allocating GHC 1.5 million for this year’s initiative.

As part of the Green Ghana Day activities, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will lead a commemorative tree planting event at the Nicholson stadium, Burma Camp in Accra. The theme for this year’s edition, “Growing for a Greener Tomorrow,” aims to rally Ghanaians to contribute to global efforts in combating climate change.

Mr. Jinapor reiterated the government’s commitment to sustainable and responsible utilization of the country’s timber resources, ensuring that all wood exports are properly licensed. He also provided details on the distribution of the 10 million seedlings to be planted in various locations across the country, including degraded Forest Reserves, farms, watershed areas, and communities.

The seedlings to be planted encompass a variety of tree species suitable for the diverse climate conditions in different regions. Examples include Eucalyptus, Mahogany, Teak, Mango, Coconut, Avocado, and many more. The goal is not only to increase the country’s forest cover but also to engage the public in environmental conservation efforts.

The Minister urged all Ghanaians to actively participate in the Green Ghana initiative, taking ownership of the trees they plant and contributing to a sustainable and greener future for the nation.
