Hajia Abibata Shanni Mahama, who hopes to represent the NPP in the Yendi constituency, has expressed her dissatisfaction with the National Executive Committee’s (NEC) confirmation of the incumbent MP, Farouk Aliu Mahama, as the party’s parliamentary candidate for the constituency.
In a statement, she described the NEC’s decision as “unpopular and unheard-of”, stating that it goes against the party’s principles. Following the chaos that occurred during the January 27 polls, Hajia Abibata petitioned the NEC to order fresh elections in the constituency.
She urged the NEC to declare the previous elections “null and void” and to prevent Mr. Mahama from claiming victory as the MP-elect for the constituency.
However, the NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, announced during a press conference on April 9, 2024, that Farouk Aliu Mahama had been confirmed as the party’s parliamentary candidate for the Yendi constituency.
Speaking to TV3, Hajia Abibata expressed her disappointment with the NEC’s decision, stating that it was unfair and biased towards the incumbent MP. Despite her disagreement with the outcome, she accepted the decision as a patriot, although she believes it was not in the best interest of the party.
When asked if the decision would impact her support for the party in the constituency, she mentioned that some of her supporters had threatened not to vote for the incumbent MP.
However, she maintained that as a party member, she accepted the decision and hoped for the best.
