Frank Billingsley, the longest-running TV weatherman in Houston, has announced his departure from KPRC 2 News after 30 years of bringing weather reports to Channel 2 viewers. This news comes just months after another KPRC meteorologist, Khambrel Marshall, shared his retirement plans in November 2023.

Billingsley, who often intertwined tidbits of his personal life with his weather forecasts, did not provide a specific reason for leaving the Houston’s NBC affiliate. However, he did mention that he is looking forward to taking a break and experiencing life without wearing a suit five days a week. His last day at the station will be on June 28, 2024.

Looking ahead, despite stepping away from reporting Houston’s weather, Billingsley has no plans to leave the area, emphasizing that Houston is his home. Reflecting on his illustrious career, Billingsley recalled a memorable weather report during a 1992 college football game where he warned viewers of an imminent tornado, despite understanding that Texas football fans may not appreciate the interruption. Thankfully, due to his warning, no deaths were reported, although the tornado caused significant destruction.

Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1960, Billingsley initially pursued a degree in journalism and mass communications before transitioning to a career in meteorology. Throughout his broadcasting career, he has covered notable weather events, with Hurricane Harvey being one of the most significant stories he has reported on.

Aside from his meteorological contributions, Billingsley is an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, men’s health, and adoption. He has shared his personal journey, including his marriage to longtime partner Kevin Gilliard and their son, Morgan. In 2018, he bravely shared his battle with prostate cancer, keeping viewers informed about his diagnosis and recovery.

Recognized for his outstanding work, Billingsley has received numerous awards for his weather forecasting and community service. He described being named a “Houston Treasure” and a “Houston Legend” as some of his most cherished accolades.

As KPRC has yet to announce Billingsley’s replacement, viewers can only hope that the new meteorologist will uphold the standard of excellence set by the departing weatherman. Frank Billingsley’s departure marks the end of an era in Houston’s meteorological landscape, but his legacy and impact will undoubtedly continue to resonate within the community he served for over three decades.
