Everyone safe after building collapses in Nairobi

A tragic incident occurred in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, on Tuesday night as a five-story building collapsed in the Uthiru area, prompting a large-scale rescue operation by the Kenya Red Cross.

Initial reports indicated that numerous individuals were trapped beneath the rubble following the collapse. However, by Wednesday morning, the Kenya Red Cross confirmed that all tenants of the building had been safely located. Additionally, ten individuals with minor injuries were treated at the scene.

Videos circulating online depicted the apartment block leaning to the side, causing alarm among bystanders. Fortunately, Bramwel Simiyu, the Nairobi disaster management chief officer, reassured the public that all 34 residents had been found and were unharmed, including a 10-year-old girl who was initially reported missing.

Despite the favorable outcome, military sniffer dogs will be deployed to ascertain if any other individuals are trapped in the debris. The collapse of the building can be attributed to the heavy rains that have been plaguing the East African nation since March, claiming the lives of 238 people and displacing 235,000 others.

It is crucial for authorities to remain vigilant and prioritize safety measures to prevent such incidents from reoccurring in the future.

Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this difficult time.
