Manchester City star Jeremy Doku has opened up about his Ghanaian heritage, despite representing Belgium on the international stage.
The 21-year-old forward was born in Antwerp to Ghanaian parents and has made a name for himself playing for Belgium’s youth teams from U-15 to U-21 levels.
Although the Ghana Football Association (GFA) had shown interest in having Doku play for the Black Stars, he ultimately decided to represent Belgium at the senior level. He made his debut for Belgium in a UEFA Nations League match against Denmark in September 2020 and went on to feature in Euro 2020, earning 20 caps and scoring two goals for his adopted country.
Speaking about his Ghanaian roots, Doku proudly acknowledged his parents’ heritage and revealed that he can speak Twi, a language spoken in Ghana.
“Of course, I’m Ghanaian because my parents are Ghanaians. I also speak Twi, which is a language in Ghana. I’ve been there once, and I’ll have to go back there again because it was a long time ago,” Doku shared on the In The Premier League Chair show.
Doku made a move to Manchester City from Ligue 1 side Stade Rennes last summer and has impressed under the guidance of manager Pep Guardiola. The talented attacker has already contributed five goals and eight assists for the club this season.
Despite choosing to represent Belgium on the international stage, Jeremy Doku remains proud of his Ghanaian heritage and looks forward to reconnecting with his roots in the future.
