The Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) has issued a stern warning to workers, urging them to not be swayed by politicians looking to incite violence in the lead-up to the December 7 elections.
This caution was given by the General Secretary of the ICU, Morgan Ayawine, as part of the May Day celebrations.
In an exclusive interview with reporter Daniel Opoku on April 30, 2024, Ayawine stressed the importance of maintaining peace and stability, highlighting that any form of unrest could tarnish the reputation of Ghana’s democracy. He called on the youth to resist any attempts by politicians to use them as pawns in causing chaos before, during, or after the upcoming elections.
The ICU is standing in solidarity with the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in advocating for peaceful elections this year. The theme for this year’s May Day celebration is “Election 2024- The role of workers and social partners in securing peaceful elections for national development.”
Recognizing the vital contributions of workers in enhancing the work environment and collaborating with employers to drive business growth, the ICU commended the efforts of workers in commemorating the day. International Workers’ Day, also known as May Day, will be observed on Wednesday, May 1st this year, to acknowledge the achievements and rights of workers globally.
