John Dramani Mahama, the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress, has made a significant gesture by cutting the sod for the construction of a new multipurpose Ndewura Jakpa palace in Damongo, in the Savannah Region.
The project, fully funded by the former President, features Malian architectural designs and includes a palace, a residence, and a meeting area. This new structure aims to address the shortcomings of the two existing palaces, which lack security features, adequate living accommodations, and sanitary facilities.
The palace has been intentionally designed to reflect the heritage of the Kagbenye (Descendants of Ndewura Sumali Jakpa) and incorporates a blend of Malian architecture. John Dramani Mahama emphasized that the Sahelian and Mande influences in the design will provide enhanced security and comfort for Yagbonwura Bii-Kunuto Jewu Soale I, his family, and sub-chiefs.
Residents of Damongo expressed their approval and gratitude for the project, with one resident, Karim Charles, stating, “It’s better late than never. Some of us have looked forward to this day for such an image-lifting structure and it has never been until today. God bless the former president.” Another resident, Maridia Alhassan, expressed pride in the new palace, highlighting the improvement in the safety and dignity of their King.
The construction project, managed by Architect Atibila and Grandeza Construction Company Limited, is expected to be completed by October 2024.
