Terry Anderson, a distinguished journalist who was famously held hostage in Lebanon for almost seven years in the 1980s, has passed away at the age of 76.

His daughter, Sulome Anderson, confirmed the news of his death on Sunday at their home in Greenwood Lake, New York. Anderson’s passing was attributed to complications from recent heart surgery.

Despite his reluctance to be labeled a hero, Anderson was widely regarded as one of the longest-held American hostages in Lebanon. He was remembered for his unwavering commitment to on-the-ground reporting and his courageous spirit both in journalism and during his harrowing years in captivity. The senior vice president and executive editor of the AP, Julie Pace, praised Anderson for his bravery and dedication to journalism.

Anderson’s abduction in 1985 captivated the nation as he was taken captive while working as a reporter in Lebanon. He believed he was targeted due to his scrutiny and investigatory work, which posed a threat to the militant group, Hezbollah. Despite enduring brutal treatment including beatings, chaining, threats, and solitary confinement, Anderson documented his experiences in his memoir “Den of Lions.”

Upon his release and return to the United States in 1991, Anderson continued to inspire others through public speaking engagements, journalism teaching, and various business ventures. He struggled with post-traumatic stress disorder after his ordeal but persevered in his efforts to heal and move forward with his life.

Anderson’s daughter emphasized that her father’s life should be remembered not for his suffering as a hostage but for his philanthropic work with organizations such as the Vietnam Children’s Fund and the Committee to Protect Journalists. His legacy will live on through his contributions to journalism and his advocacy for humanitarian causes.

Anderson’s journey from a Marine in the Vietnam War to a renowned journalist and hostage survivor exemplifies his resilience and unwavering spirit.
