The Executive Director of the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), Ben Boakye, has expressed support for the Asantehene’s call to privatize key energy institutions in Ghana.
In a recent statement, the Asantehene recommended that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Volta River Authority (VRA), and the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) be privatized to improve their efficiency and performance.
However, Boakye emphasized that privatization alone is not enough and called for the isolation of politics from the power sector. He highlighted the importance of bringing in the private sector while ensuring that the state maintains control over these institutions.
During the commissioning of a 430-kilometre natural gas pipeline in Kumasi, the Asantehene reiterated the need for the government to collaborate with the private sector in developing and managing energy companies. He emphasized the importance of attracting investors and creating employment opportunities through privatization.
The Asantehene pointed out that government-owned energy institutions like VRA and others should be diversified and handed over to the private sector to improve operations and efficiency. He also suggested that the Electricity Company of Ghana should be privatized to attract more investment and expertise.
