Former Arsenal chairman Sir John Chippendale “Chips” Lindley Keswick has passed away at the age of 84. In a statement released by the club, Arsenal announced the sad news of the death of the former chairman, who was a lifelong Gunners supporter.

Sir Chips, as he was affectionately known, had a deep connection to Arsenal, having first stood in the boys’ enclosure at Highbury in 1949. He listed George Swindin, the former goalkeeper and manager, as one of his early heroes. Keswick took over as chairman in 2013, succeeding Peter Hill-Wood, and oversaw four FA Cup triumphs during his tenure.

Retirement in 2020 allowed Keswick to spend more time with his family and pursue his passion for horse racing. He was a respected owner of several racehorses and had a successful career in banking, serving as vice-chairman of Hambros Bank and being knighted for his services in 1993.

Arsenal owners Stan and Josh Kroenke praised Sir Chips for his extensive business knowledge and love for the club, calling him the perfect chairman.

His presence will be greatly missed by everyone at Arsenal, and our deepest sympathies go out to his family during this difficult time.
