Scottish boxing legend, Willie Limond, has tragically passed away at the age of 45. Limond had a successful career in the ring, winning 42 out of his 48 fights.

Before his boxing career, Limond started as a footballer and even made five league appearances for Albion Rovers in the 1998-99 season. However, it was in 1999 when he transitioned to boxing and began his path to stardom with a win over journeyman Lenny Hodgkins.

During his 24 years as a professional boxer, Limond held titles such as the British super-featherweight, super-lightweight, and lightweight titles. He also held the Commonwealth light-welterweight, WBU lightweight, and IBO Inter-Continental lightweight titles. One of his most famous fights was in 2007 when he defended his Commonwealth lightweight title against Amir Khan, earning the respect of fans despite being considered the underdog.

Limond’s final fight was in September 2023 when he faced Ricky Burns and suffered his sixth loss of his career. Unfortunately, on April 15, 2024, it was revealed that Limond had passed away after suffering a suspected seizure in his car. He was rushed to University Hospital Monklands in Airdrie where he remained in critical condition for nearly 10 days before his son, Jake, announced his passing on social media.

Tributes have poured in for the Scottish boxing legend, with St Andrew’s Sporting Club expressing their shock and sadness at the loss of their friend. Limond will be remembered not only for his achievements in the ring but also for his infectious personality that will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
