The dynamics of this year’s general elections in Ghana seem to be shifting, according to a recent poll conducted by Global InfoAnalytics. The poll indicates that the main opposition candidate, John Dramani Mahama, is leading with 54.3% of the vote, followed by the ruling party’s candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, at 34.9%. Independent candidate Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanten secured 7.5% of the votes, Nana Kwame Bediako at 2.3%, and other candidates at 1%.
Founder of the National Interest Movement (NIM), Dr. Michael Abu Sakara Foster, expressed his thoughts on the poll during an interview on Hot Issues on TV3. He highlighted that Alan Kyerematen’s 7% support as an independent candidate is unprecedented in Ghana’s electoral history. Dr. Abu Sakara suggested that a new poll conducted after their alliance could reveal even more surprising results.
He emphasized the importance of considering the timing of the poll, stating that it was likely conducted a few weeks to a month ago and may not capture the impact of recent developments, like their alliance. Dr. Abu Sakara believes that the growing support for non-aligned candidates signifies a shift away from traditional political parties, particularly the NPP.
With a significant portion of voters still uncommitted (45%), Dr. Abu Sakara speculated that many Ghanaians are waiting for a candidate they can truly connect with before making a decision. This hints at potential opportunities for non-traditional candidates to gain traction as the election progresses.
