South Dayi Member of Parliament (MP), Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has called for the interdiction and investigation of Scholarship Secretariat registrar, Dr Kingsley Agyemang.
This follows an investigative piece by the Fourth Estate, which uncovered instances where scholarships designated for needy but brilliant students were awarded to individuals with political links and affiliations.
Responding to claims that scholarships were awarded to individuals from affluent homes, Mr. Agyemang argued that there is currently no criteria for determining who a poor person is and called for the enactment of a law on the matter. However, Mr. Dafeamekpor deemed these comments unacceptable.
According to the NDC MP, the Auditor General should conduct a special audit into the operations of the Scholarship Secretariat. He emphasized on JoyNews’ Newsfile that public office holders must be held accountable for any misconduct.
Mr. Dafeamekpor criticized Dr. Agyemang for suggesting the need for a law when the Public Financial Management Act already provides guidelines for the disbursement of public funds. He stated that Dr. Agyemang should be interdicted immediately for a special audit to be conducted into his activities.
The call for accountability and transparency in the handling of public funds is crucial, especially in ensuring that scholarships are awarded to the deserving and needy students as intended. The actions taken in response to these allegations will be watched closely by the public and stakeholders involved in the education sector.
