The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, alias Wontumi, has revealed the decision to prohibit Ejisu Constituency Chairman, Kofi Ampofo Agyapong, from running in the next parliamentary primaries.

The launch of nominations on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, marked the start of the process to find a successor to the late MP for Ejisu, John Kumah.

Despite Agyapong’s initial enthusiasm in entering the contest, prominent party officials intervened to urge him otherwise.

According to Chairman Wontumi, former Majority Leader and Suame MP Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, as well as NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, advised Agyapong to abandon his candidacy.

Wonntui indicated that their joint decision was based on the awareness that losing two key members, including the late MP John Kumah, would have a substantial influence on the party’s power in the seat.

“The constituency chairman expressed an interest in contesting the Ejisu elections, but the NPP General Secretary, the former Majority Leader, the regional minister, and many of the region’s elders approached me and advised me to advise the constituency chairman to continue as chairman.

“We know John was a bulldozer, so removing two pillars will be a blow to the constituency.” In an interview with Amansan, he stated that the previous Majority Leader and the General Secretary had advised him.
