Portuguese actor António Évora, who worked in theater, film, and television since the 1960s, passed away this past Friday at the age of 82 in Lisbon, according to Lusa Fonte, an agency affiliated with the Casa do Artista.
The precise cause of his demise wasn’t revealed at the time of his death announcement.
Born in 1941 in Atouguia da Baleia (a concert hall in Peniche, district of Leiria), António Évora had his stage debut in 1965 at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon, performing a Gil Vicente piece performed by the Companhia Amélia Rey Colaço-Robles Monteiro.
The actor began his theatrical career in many companies, including the Cascais Experimental Theater, O Bando, Artists Unidos, and the Braga Theater Company. He also performed in revues with the Vasco Morgado Company.
António Évora was a member of the Academia Portuguesa de Cinema, which said that he supported and shaped various amateur theater groups.
António Évora, who currently lives in Casa do Artista, has worked as a cultural assessor in Peniche and Bombarral, and has worked for the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation on programming and dissemination.
The Portuguese actor was the subject of a short documentary titled Évora, directed by Rafael Sá Carneiro and nominated for the Sophia Estudante 2024 awards by that academy.
