On Friday, March 9, 2024, Apostle Lilian Kumah, the bereaved wife of the late Dr. John Ampontuah Kumah, bravely entered the gloomy halls of the Accra Central Police Headquarters to file a heartbreaking complaint against Captain Smart, a radio and TV presenter with Media General, for slanderously implying that her beloved husband passed away from poisoning.
Lilian Kumah expressed extreme worry about the harm that these baseless charges are doing to her husband’s standing and the welfare of the family, especially at this time when they are still going through a difficult time of grief.
She begged the Ghana Police Service to launch inquiries into the journalist’s assertions and to ask him about the foundation of his allegations in order to put an end to this unbelievable misinformation and injustice, her voice shaking with agony and tears welling up in her eyes.
Recall that following the untimely death of John Kumah, the MP for Ejisu Constituency and Deputy Finance Minister, social media was ablaze with previously unreleased footage of Captain Smart accusing the late MP of being purposefully poisoned.
In these weeks-old tapes, Captain Smart implied that several politicians and businesses planned the poisoning as a sort of retaliation against the former Finance Minister.
He also highlighted claimed efforts to poison other notable individuals, such as Hon. Andy Appiah Kubi, MP for Asante-Akim North Constituency; Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, former majority leader and MP for Suame; and Chairman Wontumi, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party.
Early on Thursday, March 7, 2024, the residents of Ejisu learned of John Kumah’s passing, which sparked a period of grief throughout the constituency.
The late MP and Deputy Minister has received tributes from President Akufo-Addo, Vice-President Bawumia, government officials, and prominent members of the NPP and opposition parties.
In his letter, President Akufo-Addo expressed his deep sadness over the unexpected death of Hon. John Ampontuah Kumah, the Deputy Minister of Finance and Member of Parliament for Ejisu. “We are all left bereft of a bright, energetic light in our midst,” the president said.
John Kumah, 45, died in an ambulance on his way to Accra from Germany, where he was traveling for medical attention, according to his representative, Bismarck Twumasi.
Kumah leaves behind a vacuum that many people will feel profoundly, yet he is survived by his wife and six children. I hope his soul is at peace.
