Following the unveiling of the manifesto committee for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign, former Deputy General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Obiri Boahen, stirred controversy by announcing his intention to leave the party.
In a widely circulated audio clip, Boahen expressed frustration at feeling overlooked by the party since its assumption of power in 2017. He also accused Dr. Bawumia of failing to acknowledge his contributions to his bid for the party’s flagbearer position.
However, in a surprising turn of events, Boahen was appointed co-chair of the manifesto sub-committee on local government, prompting him to retract his resignation plans.
Reports suggest that Boahen had a change of heart after a discussion with Dr. Bawumia, during which the Vice President appealed to him not to abandon their shared campaign efforts.
Quoting Dr. Bawumia, Boahen recounted, “You’ve brought your train, and I’m the passenger, so why leave me behind?”
Previously, Boahen had declared his support for Dr. Bawumia’s presidential candidacy in 2024, positioning himself as the leader of the Bawumia campaign train.
However, his omission from the party’s national campaign team and manifesto committee had led him to consider an independent run in the upcoming election.
