At the age of 86, Richard “Dick” Truly, who was among the first astronauts to ride on the space shuttle and went on to lead NASA as its eighth administrator, passed away.
As a life member of the Association of Space Explorers, a professional association for astronauts and cosmonauts worldwide, Truly’s passing was officially announced on Tuesday, February 27.

As a naval aviator, Truly was one of the first applicants selected for the U.S. Air Force’s Manned Orbiting Laboratory (MOL). However, after the program was terminated in 1969, he became NASA’s seventh astronaut class along with six other MOL trainees. They were the final group selected for the Apollo program.
He was admitted to the Georgia Aviation Hall of Fame in 1995. He was inducted into the American Astronaut Hall of Fame in 2001.
The Richard H. Truly U.S. Space Program Collection at Regis University has Truly’s personal records, which he donated to the institution in 2007.
Actor John Hartmann played Truly in the third season of the alternate space history television series “For All Mankind” in 2022.
