A group from the Chicago Field Office (USA) of the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) has visited the Economic and Organized Crime Office (EOCO) in Ghana on a working visit.
Two Special Agents and a forensic accountant made up the squad that visited on Tuesday.
EOCO clarified in a Facebook post that the purpose of the FBI agents’ presence in the nation is to assist with ongoing forensic investigations.
The officials were briefed on the office’s mandate by COP Maame Yaa Tiwaah Addo-Danquah, the head of EOCO, during a brief meeting.
She also gave the team background information on the two institutions’ long-standing connection and the benefits of their ongoing investigative cooperation.
She gave the crew her word that EOCO was excited to work with them once more on the continuing investigations.
This comes after Cecilia Abena Dapaah, the former minister of sanitation, had her case sent to EOCO by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) on January 25.
The OSP took action following a lengthy seven-month investigation that was supplemented by an FBI probe.
At a press briefing, Kissi Agyebeng, the Special Prosecutor, stated that there are significant signs of possible money laundering and structuring from the investigation.
But it is not within its purview to prosecute matters pertaining to the investigation; that is the exclusive domain of EOCO.
