British Labour Party politician who was a Member of Parliament for Blyth Valley from 1987 until 2019 Ronald Campbell has passed away.
Ronnie Campbell Cause of death
Ronald Campbell died on Friday, February 23, 2024, at the age of 80. There was no cause of death recorded. However, Campbell retired in 2019 and underwent heart surgery in 2020 after suffering stomach cancer some years earlier.
Labour leader Sir Keir tweeted: “I’m sad to hear about the passing of Ronnie Campbell.
“Ronnie was a dedicated servant to the people of Blyth Valley and an impressive campaigner.”
Shadow health secretary Wes Streeting said: “So sorry to learn about Ronnie’s death.
“Throughout all his battles with his health, he never seemed to lose his good humour or his dedication to speaking up for people at the sharp end.
“Sending condolences to his family and loved ones.”
North of Tyne mayor Jamie Driscoll said: “Ronnie Campbell was a good man and a good friend.
“He was exactly what’s missing in modern politics, someone rooted in his area who stuck to his principles.”
Ronnie Campbell’s obituary information
Ronald Campbell was born in Tynemouth, United Kingdom on August 14, 1943, and grew up with seven siblings. He attended Blyth Ridley County High School, a secondary modern, and left school at 14 to become a coal miner.
Before entering parliament he was a councillor for Croft Ward, Blyth Borough, Northumberland from 1969 and a lay official of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM). He was a miner from 1958 to 1986. Campbell led picket lines in the 1984–85 miners’ strike and was arrested twice.
