Pioneering special effects artist Matt Sweeney passed away on February 19 at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Burbank from lung cancer. He was nominated for an Oscar in 1995 for his work on Ron Howard’s space epic Apollo 13.
The board of directors of Alliance of Special Effects & Pyrotechnic Operators declared his death. Sweeney founded the trade association and served as its president in the past.
