Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Minister of Communications and Digitalization and Member of Parliament (MP) for Ablekuma West constituency, has unveiled the ECOWAS free roaming program, which aims to enhance connectivity throughout the nation.
The minister clarified that although the free roaming initiative was approved in 2016, there were certain difficulties in putting it into practice.
Speaking at the Ministers Press Briefing on Sunday, February 18, on the subject of “Digital Infrastructure to Bridge the Digital Divide,” she said that Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire had a bilateral meeting in June 2023 about putting this proposal into action.
According to her, the free roaming program, which aims to encourage better integration and lower roaming costs, was initially implemented by Ghana and Cote d’Ivoire among the ECOWAS nations.
” This essentially implies that when Ghanaian users of any network in Ghana travel to Cote d’Ivoire, they will be paid the local rate for calls made to Ghana while in Cote d’Ivoire and vice versa. They would also be able to receive calls without having to pay any international roaming fees,” she explained.
According to the Minister, users from both nations will be able to use their phones without having to pay for international roaming fees thanks to the free roaming initiative.
