Following claims that tidal waves were causing chaos in the Keta municipality of the Volta Region, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Emmanuel Gemegah, has stated that the reports are untrue.
There were rumors going around that Keta was going to experience a major tidal wave surge, which would have disastrous effects on the coastal hamlet.
Residents had been fearful and anxious as a result of these reports, which prompted local authorities to act quickly.
The MCE, Emmanuel Gemegah, confronted the worries head-on, stating that as of Sunday, February 18, 2024, no other properties, lives, or livelihoods had been destroyed, despite the fact that there had been little tidal wave activity along a portion of the Abutiakope beach. The only exceptions were a few unauthorized structures in the buffer zone area.
Kedzikope in particular is completely problem-free. He said, “Fishers are going about their regular activities, and the homes along the Abutiakope and Kedzikope stretch are dry.”
Gemegah called the rumors “misinformation,” advising people to keep their cool and not distribute untrue information that would unnecessarily alarm people.
He told them that tidal surges included among the probable natural calamities that the municipal authorities were ready to face.
He informed the public of the steps taken to lessen the effects of such incidents and reaffirmed the municipality’s commitment to protecting the security and welfare of its citizens.
Mr. Gemegah emphasized the value of ethical reporting in a statement released on Sunday, February 18, 2024. He urged individuals and media outlets to confirm facts before releasing it to the public.
He emphasized that disseminating misleading information not only exacerbated anxiety and panic but also jeopardized the local government’s attempts to keep the community peaceful and stable.
The prompt action taken by the Keta Municipal Assembly to refute the rumors of a tidal wave surge indicates the authorities’ dedication to openness and efficient public outreach.
Through the Ministry of Works and Housing, the local assembly is collaborating with the Ghana Hydrological Authority to strengthen beach resilience and lessen the consequences of coastal erosion.
