Dr. Archibald Lesta, the Minister for the Volta Region, refuted the idea that people affected by the Akosombo Dam spill have been forgotten.
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, a member of parliament for North Tongu, and former president John Mahama expressed worry that over 10,000 people were still living in tents months after the disaster, which prompted this comment.
Dr. Lesta responded to the allegations by telling JoyNews on February 12 that the government was attempting to construct new homes to relocate the victims.
He claimed that a committee set up by the government was tasked with locating property on which to build dwellings for flood victims.
“The DCEs are now liaising with the chiefs and we set up the committee last week and gave them a week to come up with the identification of the site for the resettlement. I briefed the Member of Parliament [Mr Ablakwa] on Wednesday when I met him. After that, the next phase is also the restoration of livelihoods. It would be unfortunate to say that nothing is being done,” he stated.
He continued by saying that the government has also made available the money needed to start the building.
