I won’t make promises I can’t keep – John Mahama

To improve the condition of Ghana’s senior high schools, National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama has pledged to house pre-tertiary teachers.

He claims that in contrast to the current administration, he never makes empty promises.

His statement comes in response to nationwide worries expressed by pre-tertiary educators about the impact that a shortage of basic amenities is having on teaching and learning.

As part of his “Building the Ghana We Want Together Tour,” Mr. Mahama addressed pre-tertiary teachers at a Town Hall meeting in Tamale. He explained that because of the current state of the economy, which is dire, he would not make promises that he could not keep.

He highlighted several commitments made by the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia-led government, which included building factories and dams in each district but not following through on them.

He said that to encourage pre-tertiary teachers to remain on campus in the event of an election, his administration will offer accommodation support due to the current situation.

He thinks that doing this will motivate these educators to give their all in the classroom and help them avoid needless expenses.

“I can’t promise everyone that I’m going to increase salary and all that because the economy is in a big mess,” he stated. I will not be like those dishonest people who came to heaven promising to put factories in every district and dams in every village. I therefore cannot promise that I will increase your salary.

We’ve seen the difficulties pre-tertiary educators face, and I’ve offered some possible answers. In particular, we will support schools in making accommodations so that more teachers can carry on teaching.”
