People will die if Korle Bu increases cost of dialysis – Renal Patients

Concerning the possible loss of life, the Renal Patients Association of Ghana has issued a warning if the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) proceeds with raising the cost of dialysis.

This worry stems from rumors that the hospital’s renal unit is struggling to pay off a GH₵2 million debt, which it incurred three months ago before the government paid off a GH¢4 million debt.

The Director of Medical Affairs at KBTH, Dr. Owusu Sekyere, revealed that patients currently contribute only GH₵380 toward the exceedingly high costs of dialysis, which exceed GH₵720 per session.

Baffour Kojo Ahenkorah, President of the Renal Patients Association, has pointed out that patients face significant financial hardship as a result of this glaring cost disparity.

Ahenkorah emphasized the financial burden that association members already bear, as they find it difficult to cover the cost of dialysis.

In an interview with Selorm Adonoo for Eyewitness News, he conveyed his extreme worry, saying that any increase in costs would be catastrophic for patients.

Recognizing the hospital’s financial limitations, Mr. Ahenkorah pleaded with the government to step in quickly and find a solution.

“We were aware that this would happen eventually, even though it arrived a little early because they were pressured to lower the price from GH¢767.42 to GH¢380. Thus, under-recovery was undoubtedly going to occur there. But this is the actual situation as it exists.

The cost of the consumables is higher. But as it stands, everyone is aware of the state of the economy. Not even the 380 can we afford. The government must intervene.

People will pass away once more. People will perish on this thing once more. Thus, all we will do is beg the government to take action.
