The planned protest by organized labor against the 15% value-added tax (VAT) on electricity has been postponed.

Organized Labour called on the government to fully remove the new tax and threatened to carry out the demonstration despite the government’s suspension of the policy to allow for additional stakeholder engagement.

The decision was made in response to an official notification regarding the suspension of the contentious tax that was sent by the government to the labor group.

However, Dr. Yaw Baah, Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress, stressed their dedication to fighting against what he calls unfavorable tax policies during a press conference in Accra.

Organized Labor has decided to postpone its planned demonstration against the 15% value-added tax (VAT) on electricity.

Even though the government has suspended the policy to allow for more stakeholder engagement, organized labor demanded that the new tax be completely repealed and threatened to hold demonstrations.

The government notified the labor group officially that the controversial tax would be suspended, and this prompted the decision.

At a press conference in Accra, however, Dr. Yaw Baah, Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress, emphasized their commitment to combating what he terms unfavorable tax policies.

“And so, this suspension has prompted communication with the IMF. The government is pleading with them, and the IMF will not back down because they offered you two options: option A and option B. You chose option A, but it isn’t working, and you’ve already used option B, so you need to find a solution. I am pleased that the TUC is refusing to listen to the government.
