A minimum of three years in prison and a maximum of five years in prison have been approved by Parliament for those found to be knowingly endorsing, sponsoring, or assisting LGBTQ+ activities.
Moreover, a minimum term of six months and a maximum sentence of three years await those found guilty of such acts.
Sam Nartey George, the MP for Ningo Prampram, explained the reasoning for the punitive measures during parliamentary deliberations on the clause-by-clause revision of the bill concerning the development of proper human sexual rights and Ghanaian family values.
He emphasized that rather than people’s private behavior, the public is more concerned about the advocacy and promotion of such activities.
“For individuals caught engaging in these activities themselves, the punishment ranges from a minimum of six months to a maximum of three years,” George said, breaking down the sentencing.
“However, for those actively promoting, sponsoring, or supporting such agendas, the penalty increases to a minimum of three years and a maximum of five years.”
