The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) announced that Core Mathematics and Integrated Science will no longer be mandatory courses for Senior High School (SHS) students who elect to take science electives.
Professor Edward Appiah, the Director General of NaCCA, stated that this modification is a component of the new curriculum created to enhance the educational system.
In an interview with JoyNews on February 6, he clarified that science students do not require those extra courses because they already study science and mathematics in great detail.
He also mentioned that the 2024–2025 academic year is when this is anticipated to start. “This is a component of the new curriculum that we are using for elementary, junior, and senior high school.
We are stating that with the new one, all students will complete Core Math in addition to Elective Math, which was previously required of all students. Students studying Science will also add Elective Math.
“However, we’re saying that the new curriculum will require you to complete Core Math, which is extra math, and Pure Science students already do this. Since what they are going to do is sufficient for them to complete their subjects, they won’t be doing any additional math,” he continued.
He clarified that because science was not as strong in junior high school, science students were required to take Integrated Science in SHS. However with the new curriculum in place, there was no need for repetition because the junior high school curriculum was already adequate.
