Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the majority leader of parliament, is optimistic that the measure opposing LGBTQ+ rights will be amended in full, section by section, by Friday, February 9.
After a short recess on Tuesday, February 6, the Parliament is scheduled to start debating the bill today.
The act, formally known as the Ghanaian Family Values Bill and the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights, is a contentious issue that has generated a great deal of discussion nationwide and abroad.
With five to ten years in prison as a penalty, the proposed bill seeks to outlaw same-sex relationships, including oral and anal interactions.
Additionally, it aims to make it illegal to assist LGBTQ+ people, advocate for same-sex marriage or cohabitation, and provide support services.
The measure also proposes sanctions for individuals who plan or take part in LGBTQ+ activities, offer resources to the LGBTQ+ community, or create and disseminate content that promotes LGBTQ+ rights.
Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu stated in his statement in Parliament that significant changes to the measure are anticipated by Friday, February 9.
