The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has declared that it will participate in a demonstration against the Value Added Tax (VAT) of 15% on energy use that exceeds a predetermined threshold.
According to a statement that was made public, the choice was taken following a meeting held last Friday at the Trade Union Congress (TUC) headquarters.
GNAT’s regional offices have all been asked to prepare for the demonstration in order to guarantee a high level of participation.
The scheduled protest, which is being coordinated by Organized Labor, is scheduled for February 13, 2024. About 35 Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) are expected to attend.
The administration was given a two-week deadline to remove the VAT, which has already passed, and this national demonstration is the result.
GNAT claims not to have received any formal notification in spite of the Cabinet’s decision to remove the contentious pricing. As thus, they are carrying out their intended course of action.
GNAT highlights the need for official confirmation from the government regarding the withdrawal of the VAT, and the demonstration aims to address concerns about the VAT on electricity usage above the lifeline.
