The Member of Parliament (MP) representing Akuapem South, Osei Bonsu Amoah, has justified his choice to not run for reelection.
He stated that he felt it was time for him to retire from Parliament after serving in the legislature for 16 years. Mr. Amoah is among a number of well-known majority Members of Parliament who have chosen not to run for office again.
He said he was no longer a young man and that he wanted to use his experiences in other areas during an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Eyewitness News on Citi FM.
“I will have served in Parliament for sixteen years at the end of the year—four terms—two in opposition, two in power, and I am no longer a young man. Thus, there are moments when you feel like moving on. Some people are willing to commit to longer than four terms. A few of us also believe that since the work is so challenging, we ought to step down and let others handle it.
“My age is staying the same. I would have retired from public service. I’m not the young man I once was. I’m sixty-two years old. I have a lot to share from my extensive experience in this role. By the end of this year, I believe that I will have served for 16 years, he said.
Regarding his withdrawal from his constituency’s primary, Mr. Amoah angrily denied rumors that he did so to harm the chances of the Municipal Chief Executive.
