Celebrated actor Sadhu Meher, who won the national award for best actor for his moving depiction of a hearing-impaired potter in Shyam Benegal’s Ankur (1974), died on Friday at his Mumbai home. He was eighty-four.

Meher, a native of Manamunda in Odisha’s Boudh district, began his career in 1969 with Hindi films such as ‘Bhuvan Shome’, ‘Ankur’, and ‘Mrigaya’ before focusing on Odia cinema.
Five years later, in 1974, he became the first Odia to receive a national award for best actor for his portrayal in Shyam Benegal’s Hindi film ‘Ankur’.
Meher was also noted for his roles in other Hindi films, including 27 Down (1974), Manthan (1976), and Inkaar (1977).
He rose to popularity in parallel cinema in the mid-1980s, after shifting his concentration to Odia cinema. Sabyasachi Mohapatra’s 1989 Sambalpuri-language film ‘Bhukha’ features Meher’s critically lauded performance.
