Under the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), former Minister for Youth and Sports Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye has promised to fundamentally alter Ghanaian sports by 2025.
Following the senior national team’s disappointing 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) exit and the domestic league’s decline under the direction of Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku, this commitment comes after years of hard work.
Nii Lante Vanderpuye bemoaned the fall in Ghanaian football in an exclusive interview with Citi Sports, saying the government doesn’t have the will to investigate those who are still playing the sport.
The Black Stars parted ways with Chris Hughton following a lackluster showing at the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire, and as of this writing, they are without a permanent head coach.
A five-person search committee led by Vice President Mark Addo has been established by the Ghana Football Association to name Hughton’s replacement in the next few days.
Under Hughton, Ghana’s 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign saw them defeat Comoros 1-0 but defeat Madagascar 1-0 to earn three points. In June, the Black Stars will come together to play the Central African Republic and Mali in the 2026 World Cup qualifying tournament.
Numerous names have surfaced as possible candidates for the position, including Herve Renard, the U-21 Women’s Coach of France, and former German Coach Jurgen Kohler.
