Dr. Richard Amoako Boah, a lecturer in political science at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has predicted that the results of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary primaries could result in a rise in independent candidates for the elections scheduled for December 7.
Speaking on JoyNews’ PM Express on Monday, he linked this possible rift to the party’s perceived unfairness toward those who failed in the primaries, especially the sitting MPs who chose not to run again.
The instructor emphasized that if people feel the NPP was a factor in their defeat, their conflicts may lead them to think about running as an independent.
He claimed that further division inside the party may result from powerful members of the organization lending their support to certain recent arrivals.
“You’ve lost if you run against a candidate who had the vice president’s endorsement, regardless of how long you’ve been a member of the party.
He also posed the question of whether candidates who lost to candidates who had Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia’s support would still support the Vice President in the general election.
Disunity and dispersion are indicators of such, he noted in the results. Regarding Vice President Bawumia’s chances of winning back the party’s support, Dr. Boah admitted that there was uncertainty.
Dr. Boah stated that there was doubt about Vice President Bawumia’s capacity to win back party support. He did, however, suggest the power of money in Ghanaian politics when he said, “In Ghana, money can do everything, so let’s see.”
