The Electoral Commission (EC) has stated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) must decide on the next steps for the Yendi Parliamentary Primary following the disruption of counting and destruction of ballot papers last Saturday.
The Electoral Commission has not declared an official winner. While there has been no official announcement, both candidates, Farouk Mahama and Abibata Shani, have independently claimed victory in the contest.
In a radio interview with Joy News, Dr. Serebuor Quaicoe, the EC’s Director of Electoral Services, stated that an official winner has yet to be determined.
“The feedback from the region is that we were not able to declare the results there,” Quaicoe said in a statement.
“The Electoral Commission claims that we did not complete the process. Since the party is conducting and we are supervising, as I indicated, the party will need to make a decision.”
There were concerns that the defeat of 28 members of the majority party in parliament in their bids to represent the NPP as parliamentary candidates in the elections scheduled for December 2024 could have a detrimental effect on the way the house functions, especially on government business.
First Deputy Speaker Joseph Osei-Owusu promised that despite a significant number of Majority members losing their seats, the work of Parliament would not be impacted.
