Winger Osman Bukari of Red Star Belgrade has expressed regret to Ghanaians for the Black Stars’ underwhelming showing at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire.
Coach Chris Hughton was fired after Ghana lost all of their games and finished the tournament with just two points in the group stages.
Bukari participated in the tournament as a substitute twice, but his error in Ghana’s second game—a 2-2 draw with Egypt—was a low point. He was replaced, and for the remainder of the competition, he did not appear.
Bukari apologized to his fans in a heartfelt tweet, expressing his regret for letting them down.
“It has taken me quite several days to gather the words to address you, our dear fans, because of the embarrassment we brought on the nation and the fact that we let you down, and our inability to advance to the next stage has hit heavily on me, for I contributed a part in it,” he wrote in the post.
Fans can rest easy knowing that Bukari’s team will grow from its mistakes and return stronger. “I want to sincerely apologize for our errors and promise you that we will improve and return stronger for the good of our team and nation. I humbly beg your pardon for our actions. We are here to fight the day. I’m grateful for all of your love, support, and encouragement.
Bukari is now focusing on club football, but he intends to rejoin the national team in time for the March international window when Ghana might play a friendly against world champion Argentina.
