The University of Cape Coast (UCC)’s Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (IEPA) has called on education management and stakeholders to make penal codes more transformational in honor of this year’s International Day of Education.

School administrators have a crucial role in the overall development of students, according to Dr. Michael Boakye-Yiadom, the institute’s director-general.

Instead of using harsh, punitive punishments to instill hate in students, he added, they should train them.

January 24 has been designated as the International Day of Education by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). “Learning for lasting peace” was the topic of this year’s festival, the sixth since its beginning.

At the Cape Coast School for the Deaf and Blind, the IEPA observed the day with a learning forum.

According to Dr. Boakye-Yiadom, the victims are typically left with psychological and emotional wounds that are difficult to repair, which makes them despise the institutions and system.

Therefore, according to him, every type of discipline must be transformative and instructive, lead to reform, and spare the offender any sense of shame or humiliation. Education must be embraced as a vital instrument for enduring peace in homes, schools, workplaces, houses of worship, communities, and countries, according to Dr. Boakye-Yiadom.

According to Dr. Boakye-Yiadom, education must be viewed as a catalyst for peace as well as a tool for resolving conflicts and promoting sustainable peace. He exhorted pupils to always interact with peers and authoritative figures with decency, tolerance, and honesty.

Phyllis Asante Krobea, the Cape Coast Metropolitan Director of Education, stated that to foster tolerance and mutual respect among students, the curriculum must prioritize teamwork and extracurricular activities.

Abraham Anang Yemoson, the school’s headmaster, praised the IEPA for its involvement and stated that it would encourage amicable cohabitation between students, faculty, and administration.

The IEPA’s mission is to develop and enhance the ability of planners, administrators, and leaders—including those in the educational sector—as a UNESCO Category II Center of Excellence for West Africa.
