After an incredible run, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, the majority leader in parliament, has declared that it is now appropriate for Ghana’s captain, Andre Ayew, to gracefully end his international career with the Black Stars.
Ayew saw Ghana’s elimination from the group stage, having guided the team to the continental tournament in Ivory Coast. The dominant West African team suffered an upset in the AFCON, missing out on the knockout round for the second time in a row.
In an open conversation with Angel FM, Mensah Bonsu emphasized the need to address the team’s shortcomings—including Ayew—rather than blaming coach Chris Hughton alone.
We won’t get better if we keep switching coaches. Because Jordan had fulfilled his role, I felt more hope for him than for Andre among the Ayew brothers.
He no longer belongs on the team, if we are to be honest with ourselves “said Mensah Bonsu.
“You force the player on the coach,” he went on, “and you want to blame the coach, not the player.” Andre Ayew has, in my opinion, been an incredible player, much like his father, but he is currently exhausted.”
Even though Ayew recently tied Rigobert Song’s record for the most AFCON appearances with 36, Mensah Bonsu believes that a new chapter in Ghana’s football history is necessary and calls for a strategic shift.
Ghanaian supporters of football are waiting for more information and decisions regarding the legendary captain’s position with the Black Stars as the debate over Ayew’s future picks up steam.
