A driver was sentenced to eight years in hard labor by the Accra Circuit Court for trying to kidnap a father and his daughter.
Accused of plotting with Wang Liang to abduct the father and daughter and demand a ransom, Godfred Ayittey defended his actions.
According to Richard Asomaning, a witness, Ayittey called him (the witness) to discuss kidnapping, according to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Emmanuel Nyamekye.
Asomaning further stated that the driver requested that he (the witness) contact a licensed driver for the operation, as the prosecution told the court presided over by Mrs. Afua Owusua.
Asomaning allegedly pretended to be interested in the operation, according to DSP Nyamekye, and sent copies of his driver’s license, Ghana card, and friend Peter Ofoe Agbovie’s to another witness who had gotten in touch with the prisoner.
The prosecution claimed that witnesses wanted to meet with the guilty to identify their victim or victims.
The court heard that Ayittey gave Asomaning GH¢50.00 to start monitoring the victims and that the business took and sent some initial photos of its premises.
The prosecution stated that Ayittey gave GH¢50.00 to Asomaning to begin surveillance on the victims and that the convict took and sent the first pictures of the company’s premises.
As the prisoner obtained firearms for the operation, Agbovie was requested to rent a car, according to DSP Nyamekye. The prosecution said that Ayittey never met the witnesses in person and only spoke with them over the phone.
However, according to DSP Nyamekye, Tema police requested assistance from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) to investigate the situation.
The prosecution claimed to have uncovered evidence of the convict’s communication with the witnesses as well as his creation of a WhatsApp group platform, especially for the operation.
According to what the court heard, Ayittey gave Asomaning GH¢50.00 to start monitoring the victims, and the first pictures of the business’s location were taken and given to the prisoner.
Meanwhile, according to DSP Nyamekye, Agbovie was requested to rent a car by the prisoner, who procured guns for the operation. The prosecution claimed that the prisoner confessed to the crime after being located and taken into custody.
The prosecution claimed that after the guilty man was located and apprehended, he confessed to the crime and stated that Wang, a Chinese employee at DADA Foods, was the one who engineered the abduction.
