The presidency has condemned those who have deliberately misinterpreted the Central Bank of Nigeria’s decision to relocate its Department of Banking Supervision to Lagos, as well as the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development’s directive that the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) relocate its headquarters to Lagos. It chastised the individuals for inciting unnecessary ethnic tensions.
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) moved their departments from Abuja to Lagos, which has caused controversy. Bayo Onanuga, the President’s Special Advisor on Information and Strategy, clarified the situation.
He made it clear that the transfer of FAAN to Lagos had nothing to do with any intention to move the federal capital, and he blamed the debate on false information spread by “dishonest, ethnic, and regional champions.”
He claimed that the sources of these rumors, which initially arose during last year’s electioneering, were political rivals seeking to use any means necessary to keep Tinubu from winning the presidency on behalf of a portion of the populace.
He went on to say that it is improper to use the recent CBN and FAAN judgment as a justification for launching yet another round of divisive criticism.
“We want to state, unequivocally, that those behind this sordid narrative are dishonest ethnic and regional champions, trying to draw attention to themselves,” it said.
The presidential adviser stated that Abuja’s status as the Federal Capital is here to stay and is supported by the law.
