Next Parliament may suffer – Ursula Owusu-Ekuful

The Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has expressed concerns about the potential impact of the upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) primaries on the Ghanaian Parliament.

Given that eighteen current NPP MPs have chosen not to seek reelection, the Minister for Communications and Digitalization has bemoaned that the loss of institutional memory and expertise will pose a significant challenge.

She has therefore asked NPP delegates to support the retention of the current MPs and encouraged Ghanaians to support the same candidates in the December 7 elections.

The speaker emphasized the significance of these seasoned Members of Parliament serving as mentors and guides for newcomers, stating that the transfer of knowledge based on their experiences is invaluable.

Next to suffer will be the Parliament. She said in an Accra-based interview with UTV that the majority of MPs who are resigning are extremely seasoned professionals.

Ursula provided evidence to bolster his claim by describing how Osei Bonsu (OB) Amoah of Akuapem South, a new member of parliament, provided her with the guidance and mentorship she required to perform effectively in the legislature.

Ursula recognized the challenging nature of parliamentary work and emphasized the importance of prioritizing the education of newly elected members to guarantee their engaged and productive involvement in legislative proceedings.

“Therefore, I will encourage the delegates to take that into consideration and keep us, the seasoned candidates who have chosen to go on in the race,” she said.
