At the age of 82, renowned South Korean filmmaker Lee Doo-yong passed away. He laid the foundation for South Korean films to become international successes.
The film industry reports that Lee passed away at a Seoul hospital at three in the morning on Friday. Since last year, the deceased has been battling lung cancer.
After serving as an assistant director for almost ten years, Kim made her feature film debut in 1970 with “The Lost Wedding Veil.” After that, he produced six more Taekwondo movies.
In the 1980s, when South Korean films were not well known abroad, the renowned director invited to important international film festivals laid the groundwork for the globalization of South Korean cinema.
Kim made history at the Venice International Film Festival by becoming the first South Korean to win an award. For his 1980 film “The Hut,” he was awarded the Integrated Social Development Assistance Program Award.
His 1984 film “Mulleya Mulleya,” also referred to as “The Wheel,” was invited to be screened in the Un Certain Regard section of the festival, making it the first South Korean film to enter the Cannes Film Festival.
