Jerry Hilgenberg was born on April 9, 1931. Jerry attended Wilton Junction High School in Wilton, Iowa. As a high school running back, Hilgenberg played in just one season because Wilton Junction did not have a football program until he was a senior.

Still, he was inducted into the Iowa High School Football Players Hall of Fame. He joined Leonard Raffensperger’s 1950 Iowa football team as a quarterback, but he quickly switched to linebacker and centre.

Hilgenberg started his three-year tenure at Iowa in 1951 and 1953. During his senior year in 1953, Iowa finished the year ranked in the top ten in the nation for the first time since the Ironmen in 1939.

After the season, Jerry Hilgenberg was named to the first team of the All-American team, and he played a significant role in that. He was Coach Forest Evashevski’s first choice for an Iowa All-American. He led the baseball team as a senior as well.
