Ghana Television (GTV) and DSTV Ghana engaged in a friendly but aggressive marketing battle on Friday over who will broadcast the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) in a spirited debate on X (Twitter).
In an effort to give fans the greatest possible football experience, GTV announced on social media that they will be broadcasting every Afcon game. This sparked the beginning of the social media jokes.
GTV questioned the rationale for charging for people to watch when they can access all matches for free. The jokes, meanwhile, took an unexpected turn when DSTV Ghana responded with a contentious tweet that asked fans if they would rather watch low-quality Afcon matches.
“Don’t settle for terrible picture quality, poor sound or anything below standard,” DSTV Ghana tweeted suggesting that viewers should opt for high definition pictures on Supersport.
The conversation didn’t end there, as GTV cleverly retaliated by making fun of DSTV’s poor signal during downpours. GTV hinted that DSTV users will miss the action because of inclement weather in a tweet featuring a meme of a toddler taking a bath outside and whining about the weather.
Despite the lack of brand names in the tweets, internet users deduced that the competition between the Ghanaian national broadcaster and the satellite television giant over the Afcon broadcast was being spiced up.
Football fans are excited to see how this Twitter rivalry ends and wonder which network will win over the nation’s hearts and television screens for the much awaited Afcon competition. The banter has been going strong.
