Rainer Emil Gut was a Swiss bank manager who died on October 11, 2023, after being born on September 24, 1932. He had his education in Zug, London, and Paris.

He joined Lazard Frères & Co. in New York in 1968 and became president and CEO of Swiss American Corporation in 1971, a U.S. investment banking affiliate of the then SKA (Schweizerische Kreditanstalt, now Credit Suisse). He joined the Executive Board in 1973 and became a spokesman for the “Schweizerische Kreditanstalt” (SKA) in 1977, eventually becoming chairman in 1982.

From 1983 to 2000, he was Chairman of the Boards of Directors of SKA and Credit Suisse, and from 1986 to 2000, he was Chairman of the Boards of Directors of Credit Suisse Group (formerly CS Holding). From 2000 to 2005, he was the chairman of Nestlé S.A. He sat on the boards of several companies, including Alusuisse, Bayer, Swiss Re, Swissair, Daimler Chrysler Switzerland, Ciba Geigy/Novartis, Elektrowatt, and Sulzer. Gut was the Honorary Chairman of Credit Suisse Group from 2000 to 2023.
