Brendan Thomas Malone was an American professional basketball coach in the National Basketball Association. He was the father of current Denver Nuggets head coach Michael Malone. He enrolled at New York University and graduated with a master’s degree in physical education in 1968.
Brendan Malone began his coaching career in 1967 at Power Memorial Academy in New York City and served as an assistant coach at Fordham, Yale, and Syracuse in the 1970s before becoming coach of Rhode Island in 1984. In 1986, he was recruited by then-New York Knicks coach Hubie Brown to work as an assistant, which kickstarted his NBA career.
Brendan Malone made his resignation announcement on October 23, 2013, with the “rigors of coaching in the NBA” cited as the reason. On May 30, 2014, Malone was one of three assistants hired to serve under new Detroit Pistons head coach Stan Van Gundy.
