South Korean football manager Park Jong-hwan was born in Ongjin, Hwangnam, Chsen, on February 9th, 1938, and died there on October 7th, 2023. Park Jong-hwan’s violent behavior earned him the moniker “Bat Park.” After graduating from Chuncheon High School and Kyung Hee University, he continued to love the sport throughout high school and college. He started working for Korea Coal Corporation in 1964 as a player before switching to coaching.
For his part as Byeon Deuk-jong in the psychological thriller drama Hell Is Other People, Park is well-known. Park is regarded as one of the best South Korean football managers of the twentieth century, having managed the South Korean under-20 team to the 1983 FIFA World Youth Championship semi-finals and Ilhwa Chunma to three consecutive K League titles from 1993 to 1995. He left an indelible impression by exhibiting a wide range of abilities while the players’ coordination was faultless. He was, however, condemned for his harsh techniques and aggression with players.
Coach Park previously worked as a teacher and coach at Seongnam High School, Yushin High School, and Jeonnam Mechanical Technology High School, where his team won the President’s Gold Cup high school football title in 1975. In 1983, he guided the Korean squad to the World Youth Football Championship semi-finals in Mexico, the first time Korea had reached such a stage in a FIFA-organized competition.
