Pat Arrowsmith, an author and peace activist from England, was born on March 2nd, 1930. Arrowsmith, the third youngest child, was born in Leamington Spa to office employees. She was born to Margaret Vera Arrowsmith (née Kingham) and the Reverend G. E. Arrowsmith.
When the family moved to Torquay in 1939, Arrowsmith enrolled at Stover School. She changed schools to Cheltenham Ladies College in September 1944. She originally studied social science as a US-UK Fulbright Scholar at the Universities of Liverpool and Ohio after completing her history degree at Cambridge’s Newnham College. She was an integral part of the creation of the CND in 1957.
In addition to supporting feminism, lesbianism, the end of the Vietnam War, the withdrawal of British troops from Northern Ireland, the end of the Gulf War, and nuclear disarmament, Arrowsmith is a proponent of peace.
Arrowsmith had a close friendship with Wendy Butlin, a fellow peace activist and one of the founding members of the Committee of 100. Arrowsmith filed for divorce from poet Donald Gardner after just one day of marriage because she needed the relationship to inherit her father’s fortune. She later contributed some of the funds to several political causes, including Gay Pride Week in 1979.
