According to a recent newspaper report by the Daily Guide dated July 28, 2023, former President and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has made the decision to replace Professor Nana Jane Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate.
Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang had previously partnered with John Mahama during the 2020 general elections.
However, the party is now engaged in an extensive consultative process to find a suitable replacement.
Sources close to the former president revealed that a listening survey is currently being conducted among NDC delegates to gather their preferences for Mahama’s new running mate.
The decision to drop Professor Opoku-Agyemang has led to divisions within Mahama’s inner circles.
While some still support her candidature, citing her previous role as the former Education Minister in Mahama’s administration, critics argue that she contributed minimally to the NDC’s performance in the 2020 election, particularly in her home region, Central.
Furthermore, there are calls from certain quarters to consider candidates from regions other than Central to broaden the party’s voter appeal.
Amidst these developments, Professor Opoku-Agyemang’s absence at the recent wreath-laying ceremony for the late President John Evans Atta Mills at Asomdwe Park on July 24, 2023, raised eyebrows.
